E-Safety for Parents and Carers

Young people are likely to be as good as, if not better than, their parents at using the Internet.

However, being good at using technology does not mean they have the life-experience and wisdom to handle all of the situations they can come across. Young people are prone to the same kinds of risks (including spam and scam emails, fraud and identity theft) as everybody else. However, there are also other, more sinister threats that may result from going online, such as inappropriate contact from people who may wish to abuse, exploit or bully them, and exposure to inappropriate material.
 
Below is a list of keywords and phrases that parents and carers may want to know, so as to help keep up with their children:
 
 

GNOC - Get naked on camera

ASL - Age, sex, location

IWSN - I want sex now

LMIRL - Let's meet in real life

IRL - in real life

RU/18 - are you over 18?

WYRN - what's your real name?

Zerg - to gang up on somebody

POS - Parents over shoulder

PAL - Parents are listening

KPC - Keep parents clueless

P999 - Parent alert

MOOS - member of the opposite sex

420 - Marijuana

143 - I love you

183 - I hate you

CYT - See you tomorrow
