Careers and Post-16

Careers

We strongly believe that our students should all have access to high quality careers education, advice and guidance through all years and particularly at key transition times to explore the full range of opportunities available to them.

At Mo Mowlam Academy, we provide a wide range of careers support and activities.  Our careers programme includes one to one and small group interventions to prepare the students with the key skills they need enter further education, training and employment; opportunities to access vocational and work placements; support with visits and applications to providers; guidance from a member of staff trained to offer independent careers information, advice and guidance.

In addition to the above, our PSHE programme includes a wide range of careers, information, advice and guidance across all year groups. We also offer targeted activities such as visiting guest speakers from different vocational areas and employers, Further Education visits and talks. Any employers who are interested in becoming involved with the students at Mo Mowlam Academy please contact one of the Careers Leaders and we will be happy to arrange a visit.

We use Compass+ to assess where we are to meet the Gatsby Benchmarks, as required by the Department for Education. There are 8 benchmarks to meet, these are:

  1. A stable careers programme: An embedded programme known to pupils, parents, teachers, and employers.
  2. Learning from career and labor market information: Access to quality information about future study and job opportunities.
  3. Addressing the needs of each pupil: Tailoring support to address individual needs, including aspirations and intended destinations.
  4. Linking curriculum learning to careers: Subject teachers emphasizing the relevance of curriculum to career paths.
  5. Encounters with employers and employees: At least two meaningful encounters, including one through the curriculum.
  6. Experiences of workplaces: Meaningful, firsthand experience of a workplace, particularly by age 16 and 18.
  7. Encounters with further and higher education: Understanding non-school education opportunities.
  8. Personal guidance: Opportunities for interviews with qualified, independent career advisors.

The assessment is carried out every term, here is our last Compass+ report found here <here>

Local Labour Markets

We regularly talk about the local labour market, as this has changed so much recently. It is important that students know what the main opportunities are within the area, as there are regularly new roles being created.
When we talk about this we abbreviate to LMI. We have included links to the LMI information for Redcar and Cleveland and the Tees Valley below.
