Primary Curriculum

We use a variety of reading programmes, taking the elements which are most useful for individual learners, following the Oxford Reading Tree programme. We also use various online resources to support with phonics, such as Lexia and Nessy. Maths is also delivered in various forms, including Numicon and online resources such as My Maths, Maths Wizz and Maths Seeds as appropriate.

Students are taught in mixed ability groups, and in all classes there are small group interventions in order to support pupils in gaining the key skills to become successful readers, writers and mathematicians.

Progress is monitored against the national curriculum objectives and recorded on Learning Ladders, allowing staff, students and parents to see the individual steps of learning a child has achieved.

Whole school activities and opportunities within and outside school all enrich and develop the children’s learning. Additional whole school programmes and approaches support quality education and the school is well resourced in terms of learning materials, books and technology. A strong emphasis is placed upon encouraging our pupils to become confident and engaged in the world around them, and further develop their reasoning and problem solving skills.

The outdoor environment and the local community are considered an opportunity for active learning for all our pupils.

Pupils have opportunities to share their learning with each other, their parents and carers and other learners through school-based and external exhibitions, performances, competitions and events. Developing their independence and motivation as learners and their sense of responsibility as future citizens is at the heart of all our teaching and learning.
